Voter I.D. Laws

The case for the new Voter I.D. Laws that have been pushed by ALEC and adopted by various states recently can be summed up into a few claims.

First, they claim they are doing this to stop fraud at the voting locations. This claim fails (at least in Tennessee) as the only documented case of voting fraud in the entire state in recent years was perpetrated by poll workers, the very people charged with protecting the integrity of the vote by checking I.D. & registration of the voters. The new law would not fix the problem.

Second, they claim that everyone opposed to the new law are being unreasonable because we all have to show photo I.D.s all the time already, so there should not be any problem to show it when voting. This claim fails because it is patently untrue.

Over 100,000 senior citizens in Tennessee have Tennessee Driver Licenses with no photos on them; this is a program the Legislature approved several years ago. Very few of these seniors have any form of photo I.D. which would be acceptable under this new Voter I.D. law.

Also, many college students use their school I.D. for daily purposes & some of them have no Driver License or other photo I.D. that passes muster for this new law.

Finally, many poor people (who ride the bus or get a friend or relative to give them rides and who don’t have checking accounts, so they don’t write checks) have no photo I.D. that is good enough under this law.

So, all these people are being denied the right to vote, even if they are registered and have their voter registration card, under this new law.

It just so happens that these groups are composed of people who tend to vote Democratic more often than Republican, and the legislatures that passed these new laws are majority Republican. Anyone with 3 active brain cells can do the math here & see that the GOP is using these laws to cheat by denying the vote to Democractic voters.

Otherwise, why would they put so much effort into passing a law that won’t fix the problem of voter fraud but will deny the vote to hundreds of thousands of voters in Tennessee (and probably millions of voters in total in all the states won over by this ALEC scheme) ?

If you want to stop illegal aliens from voting, just say so and make it about that limited thing. Almost everyone will support that goal. Of course, that would mean you have to repeal Voter I.D. laws focused on election day and revise the registration process, as that is where they should be stopped.
