Lately, I have been thinking of how we are all miracles — the results of people coming together from much different places, uniting into a common family and sending the love & heritage of that family into the next generation. Many of these unions appeared very unlikely before they happened.
In my own case, I have ancestors who came together from vast distances, meeting for the first time on the boat coming to America, or in various other improbable scenarios.
Or I could tell you about how my parents, Dad from Arkansas & Mom from Georgia, met in Michigan.
And how I used to live in Birmingham, Alabama, and think that I might one day leave there, travel hundreds of miles & meet my special someone — and that’s exactly what I did after moving to Memphis.
I could not have foreseen the string of events that led me to meet & marry my wife almost 20 years ago.
If you believe in a God of order, you would say these apparently-randomly-assembled families are all part of a grand plan, a Master Design.
If you don’t believe in such a Deity, you would say that these are not such random events, that given a finite Earth & a finite number of people, something like this was bound to happen.
Or, as a third way, you may take comfort in being amused & delighted by life, dancing through the chaos & the music, stepping happily around the flotsam & through the noise, without needing to answer the big questions.
In any case, for today at least, you can let the whimsy and randomness of the universe wash over you, like a wave upon the shore, bringing at times junk & debris, at times wonders & marvels.
If you have found yourself in a relationship with a Special Someone, cherish it, whether you see it as part of God’s plan or just the result of a series of happy accidents that brought you two together.
May the Light of Love which moves through all life shine upon you & your relationships, today & forever more.
