Tea Party versus Occupy

All those who expect the Tea Party or Occupy Wall Street to go away any time soon are going to be disappointed, as each of them speak to a real need for change in America.

The Tea Party began for the same reason Occupy Wall Street began – namely, it is impossible to look at where we are & not see that too much has changed for the worse in recent years.

Where they differ is in what they focus upon as bad & how effective they have been politically.

The TP has elected people to Congress while Occupy is still doing sit-ins.

Of course, the TP was funded & given deep media support by the 1%, so that accounts for much of their electoral success.

Even so, a movement that consists of sit-ins without a list of demands is no way to effect change, no matter how valuable the points are that such a sit-in may raise.

If Occupy is ever going to live up to its initial potential, they will need to get over the ahistorical notion of a leaderless group & get organized enough to have spokespeople and a strategic vision of where they want things to go.
