Free speech that only applies when almost everyone agrees with what you’re saying is a thin gruel, a soup too watered down to nourish anyone. If you can not freely speak even the most ignorant or odious or blunt thoughts that you hold, then you do not have free speech.
Of course, other people are free to react to your speech. It would be pointless to speak if you did not seek to get a reaction. Once you’ve spoken, the consequences of your speech are beyond your control. You may try to mitigate unpleasant responses or to promote pleasant ones, but it will be up to those who hear your speech to determine how or if they react.
A wise person takes these facts into account before opening their mouth or posting anything online. Alas, I am often far from wise.
Having said all that as prelude, here is my thought for discussion:
America is exceptional in the same way that the Special Olympics are special.
